Purpose

What is the purpose of thriller?

Purpose:

A thriller is a type of story presented in different forms, such as a book, a play, or a movie. It serves as an exciting and suspenseful plot that aims to keep the audience on the edge of their seats and fully engaged, typically the whole time. Some stories allow a few moments as "breathers" to give the suspense a break.

The storylines of thrillers typically present the view of the main character who faces an issue with another person, thing, or situation that they must confront and get through. Some stories may end with them getting through it and others might not. The goal is to create a story that is appealing to the audience in order to generate their interest and anticipation before they even watch it. This allows for effective marketing and interesting plot to be needed.

Expectations:

The audience has created expectations for the storytellers to meet in order to reach the correct audience and satisfy them. Their main thing the audience looks for in the thriller genre is strong emotions such as excitement, surprise, anticipation, and anxiety. These all fall under the main objective of suspense, which can be achieved through elements of violence or psychological dilemmas.

It is important to understand that the storylines created for thriller are very likely not appropriate for a younger group of people. This makes the producers job more specific with the expectations of a smaller window of audience. They must create these expectations to be suspenseful in order to keep the audience engaged with not only the specific story, but also the genre itself.

Targeted audience:

The thriller genre is targeted to a specific audience that enjoys the emotions that keep them on the edge of their seats, some being suspense, mystery, or anticipation. These are also considered to be key elements within the thriller genre which helps shape the genre as a whole. The targeted audience for thriller may also depend on the sub-genres specifically.

The general age range of audience is around 15-50, but sub-genres generally attract a specific age range within the main one.
  • Action thrillers are specific to audience that are at the younger age range of 15-30 years old, typically males, who enjoy the fast-paced and destructive scenes in the story.
  • Psychological thrillers aim at a larger audience of females around 18-35, who enjoy the character-driven suspense and twisted narratives.
  • Crime thrillers appeal to a more mature audience, typically 35 years or older, who prefer the more slow-paced, investigation storylines.
